My final animation with the Singing In The Rain Track coming on and ending only when the character comes to life.

Here is my final animation with sound, I have done two final pieces with sound on them as I couldn't decide which one I liked best. This one is with sound effects and the singing in the rain track all the way through it from start till end, my other final piece which I will be posting shortly starts with sound effects and the singing in the rain track comes on and finishes only when my character comes to life. So here they are hope you enjoy!!

Here is my final animation, with rain added to it. I have not added sound to it yet which I will be posting shortly as the final finished piece with credits at the end.

I have made the rain drop and splashes which I will use in my animation in Photoshop here is the original ones I done and I have just duplicated them in aftereffects to create all the rain.

This is my finished animation and what it will look like, although it has not yet had rain added to it, I have added a shadow to my character so it looks like he is landing on the floor instead of the illusion of him floating, also I have added the ending on with the people starting to walk past in the background again and cars driving past.

Following the previous post about the puddle not looking right, this animation test shows the puddle at the front now in the same shape and growing gradually through the film, I think this looks far better than the puddle changing shape. I have also added where the puddle gets splashed on the sign at the end and the water drips down the sign.

I have added a puddle on the front street in this one, however iI didn't really like how it changed to different shapes as it grew as iI think it looked a bit stupid, so I changed the puddle to the same shape and made it grow. This test shows the puddle changing to different shapes which I didn't like.

Here is the start credit page which I have made for my animation, I created this in photoshop then brought it into aftereffects and animated the sparkles just to make it look more interesting.

I have added the credit start page as shown above to this animation, also I have added smoke to the car as it drives past.

In this animation I have added the car which drives past at the end.

On this animation it has got the car driving past at the end slowed down slightly as I thought it was to fast in the previous tests I done, I have also animated the road cone knocking over as the man swirls around the lamppost.

I will take a random few of my renders to show you the progress of my animation, this first one is off an added part to the character dancing.

Here I have added this animation to show the next part of the man dancing and swirling around the lamppost.

I decided after looking at my animation and talking to one of the tutors about it so far that I didn't like the way my silhouette turned into my character after all the work I have done with him as well!!! So I have decided instead to use the silhouette as my character with the eyes. I had already drawn another eight seconds of animation of the work man character doing his dance and then I had to start the whole animation drawings again with just my silhouette. As I decided this quite late on in the course I have also shortened the dance a bit so that I would have enough time to get it finished and not have to rush through it.

This stage in my animation shows the changes which I have done with my character not been a work man any longer but a silhouette instead, also of him jumping in the air. I have also shortened the part when he opens his eyes to look around as when my tutor seen it he advised that it was too long and would get boring very quickly, so I changed this to just the left eye opening looking around quickly and the same with the right, but left them both opening together out.

In this stage of my animation I have added a bit extra to when the silhouette turns into my character. I wanted him to have a bit of a beer belly like a lot of work men have!!! So because the silhouette obviously does not when my character changes he is breathing in and when he stands up his belly flops out. He also just has another quick look around and nods his head for the singing in the rain track to start.

In this one I have the silhouette come out of the sign and magically turn into my character, I don't like the way he changes into my character and will change this later to a puff of smoke or to stars glittering a bit like on my animatic.

This is the first stage for my final animation I will post them on in stages of my progression, this one shows the start with the people and cars driving past, also the silhouette in the sign opening his eyes to make sure there is no one about.

Ruth also asked me if I would do some glass textures for her, so above shows the different glass textures I made for her. The very bottom one is off a test really, I started doing it to get a glass effect and didn't really like it so started on the one above and decided I liked that one better so used that for the final texture design for Ruth.
The second bottom texture which I made and liked is one of three stages, this one, the first one been clean and unbroken so Ruth can edited as she wishes with different dirt and cracks etc. The next one I done is of the glass with dirt on it unbroken, again Ruth can edit this if she wishes to have different kinds of dirt in different places, the top one has dirt and cracks on it and Ruth can use this direct as a texture. She has decided to use the top one with cracks on her piece and also to use the clean and dirty ones and edited them to her likings and also so all the windows don't look the same with the same cracks and dirt.

As part of our final coarse we had to do some work on another persons project. My friend Ruth Brewer is doing her project as a matt painting of a destroyed city, she asked me to do some textures for her so for my part on other work this is what I done. The above image is off a mud texture I have done for Ruth's city, she is going to use this in her piece on the ground tiled with patches of grass added on top of it.
Above the mud texture is an image of a destroyed building in which I also made for Ruth's matt painting. As she wanted her city to be destroyed I have made this building in Photoshop looking destroyed and dirty, with references to a picture Ruth found on the Internet in the style in which she liked. She is also going to use this in her final piece by adding it to planes and putting it in the background.

Shown here are my final drawn storyboards finished and coloured. I wanted to do these story boards in colour as well as black and white to get an idea of the story happening in the final colours I will be using in my animation.

Here is my final animatic it is the same as the previous one apart from I have added the people and cars at the beginning and then disappearing when the rain starts and then at the ending reappearing when the rain has stopped. I have not added sound to my animatic yet but have decided and found a form of the singing in the rain song. It is just a music form of the song as I did not want any singing in the animation, I also have decided on my sound effects which include rain, a busy town sound effect and other small sound effects such as the cone been knocked over, the car driving past at the end etc. The track which I have chosen is Singing In The Rain by Franck Pourcel, from the album Dancing In The Sun.

As I have said in the previous post that I changed the idea of the puddle forming in the back street to the front one, here is the animatic which shows this change, it also has the car driving past at the end and splashing the work area and the character been back in the sign after the car has past.

I have also added a road cone beside the lamppost I have done this as I was advised by tutors that it would be a good idea to have the character change something in the work area, as then when he is back in the sign after the car drives past the changes in which he makes are still there for the audience to see. So by adding the road cone beside the lamppost when the character swirls around it he can knock the cone over with his foot.

In this animatic I have added the rain which I want I my animation, some splashes, a puddle in which I was first going to put on the street behind the work area and have a car drive past on the back street. This idea has been slightly changed as mentioned before, as now the puddle will form on the front street and the car will drive past on front of the work area not behind it.

Here is the first animatic I have done, this will give you a better idea on what my final piece will look like, this animatic shows the basis of my ideas with the character changing from the silhouette and an idea of what the character will be doing through the animation.

This is the car I have designed for the end of my animation, it will drive past and splash through a puddle near the end also this is colourful and fits with my other work. Above the line drawing I done and below the coloured and final image.

Above are the vehicles I have done also for the background of my animation, at the beginning and the end they will be driving past, again the bottom ones been rough drawings and the above coloured and finished. Also the same as the designs for the people I wanted to keep these simple yet effective colour wise so they would blend with the whole style of my animation.

Shown here are the characters in which I have designed to be the people walking past in the background at the beginning and at the end of my animation, below rough line drawings and above the final coloured designs. I have kept these characters basic and simple as I did not want them to stand out to much against the background, I wanted them to blend in nicely which I believe I have achieved.

These are the final drawn storyboards of my final idea for my animation, I have changed these storyboards to show how I have changed my ideas slightly. As mentioned earlier I will now start my animation with people and cars in the background and then disappearing when it starts raining. The camera will then zoom in on the men at work sign and the silhouette will come to life by opening his eyes to check around and make sure there is nobody around. He will then come out of the sign change into my character, the work man, the singing in the rain track will start and he Will do a dance in the rain.
I have also decided to change the end slightly by having a car drive past the character work area and men at work sign. There will be a puddle forming on the street on front of the work area throughout the animation and then when the car drives past at the end it will splash through the puddle onto the work area, and character. When the car has past, the character will be back in the men at work sign as a silhouette again, the rain will stop and people and cars will start to appear again.

These are my final background images and what they will look like on my final movie, the top one showing where the work area will be. I will be bringing this image into after affects in different layers and using debt of field to give it a 3D look and the illusion of distance and so that the cars in the background will be able to pass by the buildings.
I wanted the background to look 3D from the start and did not know how to achieve this, I was told about the debt of field tools in after effects and got help from tutors and learnt how to achieve this.

Here are the turn arounds for my character that I have changed to be completely black with the white detailing which will be the final design of the work man for my animation.

I wanted to change my character to look more similar to the silhouette in the men at work sign, I decided this after some advice again form my tutors suggesting that the work man character still didn't fit in so that it looks like it changes from the silhouette. I didn't wan my character to loose his cartoony look to much so i changed it in two different ways to keep his characteristics and to also make him more similar to the silhouette.
I changed the shadings in the bottom image darker but I think that when I done this it takes away from the details to much. So then I decided to do him completely black and change all his details to white so they would stand out more, which is shown in the top image, I like this idea and I also like the style of him more as he will now look more like the silhouette, keep his cartoony look and also stand out more on the background.

These are my first set of finished storyboards which I done based on my original idea and my original background. The idea has changed slightly from these storyboards but if you look through them it will give you a rough idea of how the plot for my animation will go. If you click on any image in my blog the full size will come up so you can see the images more clearly.

In the design I kept the colour of the foreground building and the style but instead of just having a block colour like the previous design and adding effects such as bevel and emboss I decided to paint it instead to give it more of a flat look and more cartoony, just how I like it, and add shading by painting it not using effects.
I also decided to work the rest of the background around this building keeping the style and used the tutors advice using unrealistic colours for things; such as the footpath been a lime colour and the streets been green and the lamppost been red, but although they are unlikely colours I believe they work very well together and makes the design look far better, far brighter and far more appealing. I also like the way in which I done the sky which was bulding up different shades of purples and blues on top of each other in layers.

I decided to change the background as it looked to closed in and not enough to look at, I also decide that it needed to be a bit more brighter. I have kept elements from the original design in which I liked such as the building in the foreground and the idea of the lamppost. I also had some advice from my tutors not to depend on real life colours in cartoons as it is good to exaggerate colours and is not necessary to have them look realistic.
These are the line drawings I have doen for my final background design and decided to definitely use this as I really like it and prefer it far more to the previous one I made, I also drew one with the work area on it to get an idea how they both will look like together. I added more buildings in the background instead of having it closed in to just two buildings on one street and also so the design could have a sky and a view as such to look at further than just the building in the foreground.
The other reason I done this was so I could change my animation slightly, I have decided to start it off with some people walking by and cars driving in the background instead of having just sound effects and not actually seeing it, once the rain starts they then all disappear inside out of the wet. Due to this I liked the idea of having a more busier background and been more open and town like.

Finished image of my background and with the work area I designed added to it.

This is the design I have made for the men at work sign and done it in three different stages to give an idea of how it will look. The first showing the sign with the character in it, the second with his eyes open and the third without the silhouette. In the third sign i decided that when the silhouette comes out I wanted it to be left with an indent of where he should be, so I made it to look like this so the audience relates to the silhouette coming from inside the sign.

I have taken the rough drawing and design I done of the work area as I really liked this, brought it into photoshop redrew it and coloured it. I aimed to make it so it would suite well with my background, I think that it does and works very well together and keeps the cartoony style which I like.
Here is the background I have designed and coloured for my animation, I have used the rough drawing shown in the previous post as a bases to eventually design the background above, I used the same building style as in the line drawing and the idea of a lamppost and drain on the floor. The only thing that has been changed slightly is the extra building which is only partly shown and the alley with a gate in between the buildings.
I like the idea of the colours been very cartoony and bright as i think this appeals to people more than it looking dull and using dull colours, I also prefer to work in this style.

I done this rough drawing of the work area on a street and liked the idea of it and the design so I have decided to use this image as a bases on what I want the background and the work area to eventually look like.

These are the turnarounds I have designed for my work man character, I done the line drawing first then brought it into Photoshop and drew over it and colored it with black and white shading.

Originally I wanted my design of the work man to change from the silhouette into a coloured character, but after some advice from my tutors and thinking about the style myself I decided that the character would fit more into my animation as a black and white character.
I decided this as the silhouette on the men at work sign is black and if he was to change into a coloured character then they would not really correspond together as one, so due to this it was a better idea to have the character as a black and white design so that the audience relates more to the character been the silhouette but coming to life magically as a work man.
Here I have brought my line drawing into Photoshop and coloured it in black and white, then I have made the character from scratch as a final design in black and white shading, also done in Photoshop.
